Strangulation is one of the most dangerous forms of domestic violence.
It can cause hidden, life-threatening injuries even when no marks are visible.
Warning Signs After Strangulation
While these are many of the possible warning signs of strangulation, they are not the only ones.
You may experience additional symptoms not listed here.
Always seek medical care after strangulation, even if you feel okay or don’t notice visible injuries.
Physical / Visible Signs
· Bruising, redness, scratches, or swelling on the neck or face
· Small red spots (petechiae) on the face, neck, mouth, or eyes
· Rope, cord, or hand marks on the neck
· Swelling of the lips, tongue, or inside the mouth
· Broken blood vessels in the eyes (bloodshot or red eyes)
Breathing & Swallowing Problems
· Trouble breathing, shortness of breath, or feeling like your airway is tight
· Wheezing, coughing, or choking
· Pain or difficulty swallowing
· A lump-in-throat feeling
Voice / Communication Changes
· Hoarseness, raspy voice, or loss of voice
· Trouble speaking or making sounds
Neurological / Brain Function Signs
· Headache, dizziness, or lightheadedness
· Blurred vision, double vision, or seeing “spots”
· Loss of memory, confusion, or difficulty concentrating
· Feeling disoriented or “out of it”
· Fainting, loss of consciousness (even briefly)
· Seizures
· Loss of bladder or bowel control (incontinence)
Other Concerning Symptoms
· Nausea or vomiting
· Swelling or tenderness in the throat
· Neck pain or stiffness
· Ringing in the ears
· Numbness or tingling in the arms, hands, or legs
· Restlessness, anxiety, or sense of panic after the incident
